Too much money is a drama comedy set in the 1970,s mainly in the Radford and Hyson Green districts of Nottingham. It is about a semi pro pub/club band playing mainly dives, strip joints and iffy clubs. A lot has been written about the star names of this period but very little of acts playing the spit and sawdust shit holes in the dodgy back street areas earning just enough to keep their untaxed rusty old Ford Transit with no reverse gear on the road which most of the time needed push starting by the whole band and sometimes passing strangers or maybe parking on a hill.
Radford and Hyson Green in the 70,s was a melting pot of different cultures and areas of poverty but our own brand of sense of humour got us through some of the toughest situations. It has a unique culture and vibrancy with eclectic characters to bring to screen. I use my own experiences growing up in Radford and playing in these places to bring authenticity to the characters and settings offering a unique Nottingham voice and mentality. The dodgy places the band played attracted among the decent people a good sprinkling of cagey punters including Tottys, Pimps, Dippers and armed robbers to name a few which made these gigs a joy to play to hone your University of Life degree grade A*, and when Goose Fair was in town these were the places not to be missed.
Although the series is based mainly on the bands exploits there is also a deeper side with dark sub plots and the depths that some of the characters have to endure just to get by as in real life.
Some of the storylines are based on real events and the characters a mixture of real people that I have had the pleasure or misfortune of working with over the years.

PAUL SINGLETON or “SINGO”is a 25 year old bricky and is the bands bass player and front man, he is a cheeky wind up merchant with a warped sense of humour and has some maturing to do. He takes nothing seriously, is very care free and always up for a laugh. Singo can handle himself and doesnt suffer fools badly and will not tolerate bullys, he is prone to get rich quick schemes that always amounts to trouble but he will always keep trying. PENNY Very pretty 20 odd year old who works in a bank. She lives with Singo and is the more level headed and considerate of the pair and is always cautious of his bird brained schemes but always there to bail him out. JASPER (70,s) is an articulate, wise and slightly eccentric old sod who has pristine knowledge of the turf, he is privy to certain privileged inside knowledge from the high end of the elite closed shop inner horse racing circle having been within it in his earlier years. JB the PIMP is an opportunist but looks after his ladies, especially Jackie, he knows the hustle of the street and how to survive but is slowly realising that age is catching up with him. JACKIE is a transgender prostitute. She lives with her ageing Mam who doesnt know the life she leads to put food on the table. Shes as tough as old boots but will jump at any opportunity to get away from the hand shes been dealt. ROXY is a female prostitute and soulmate of Jackie, they both look out for each other on their “night shifts” down Hyson Green, she is a single Mam that says it how it is and takes no shit off anyone. GERRY RADFORD (50,s) The local Bookie and threatening figure in the community who thinks he,s Lord of the Manor , he is also a loan shark that leaches off peoples misery and not to be messed with. ARMPIT is the bands drummer who lives up to his nickname from his fear of soap and water. He is a sexual deviant and dirty bastard who would shag anything even if it didnt have a pulse and must have a yearly golden membership card to the local Peel St Pox Clinic and be on first name terms with the staff. Set in Nottingham yes, but wherever you live people of a certain age can relate to some of the story lines and know someone that relates to some of the characters, ( we all know a person like Armpit).
A period drama comedy set in Nottingham’s Hyson Green. An impoverished melting pot of different cultures where a cycle of exploitation runs amok as factory workers fritter their hard-earned in betting shops and loan sharks, racketeers, sex-workers and small-time gangsters do cutthroat business. It’s a place with a unique story to tell and eclectic characters to bring to screen.
